English Club As an Extracurricular Program at SMA Islam PB Soedirman
A. Background
English is considered as the most important language in the world for communication purposes. Unfortunately, the position of English in Indonesia is just a foreign language . It means that English is only taught in the classroom. Consequently, Indonesian students do not have a chance to practice and use their English outside the classroom. To minimize this problem, some schools conduct extracurricular program of English in order to give the students more chance to practice and use their English. The aim of conducting the extracurricular program depends on the school itself. Different schools may have different extracurricular programs and different purposes . SMA Islam PB Soedirman which is located in East Jakarta tries to conduct an English Club as an extracurricular program of English. The aim of conducting this program is to train students' English language skills so that they are ready for English contests such as debate, speech, bee-spelling and story telling contests or other competitions that related to English.
B. Purpose
1. To increase students' communicative skill in English.
2. To apply or use students ' communicative skill in English.
3. To train students to deliver English speech, debate , tell a story (story telling)
C. Strategy
1. Conducting English Course for students once a week after school.
2. Conducting English Fun Club activities, like watching films together, playing scrabble, appraising poem
or songs, etc.
3. Activating English Wall Magazine .
4. Conducting and participating in English competitions.
5. Conducting English day (Friday) for teachers, staffs, and students.
6. Conducting Program evaluation .
